Ship building, furnaces, wrought iron, Harley Davisons, lead mining and Heavy Metal Bands were just some of the source s of inspiration forming in the creative minds of four textile artists.
Moulton Slagge by Rose Stanley
Rose Stanley, Chris Dixon, Anne Tuck and Gillian Arkley formed the group ‘It Happens’ in 2006 to push the boundaries of their quilting experiences.
With a background in Traditional Patchwork they wishes to experiment with new and innovative techniques and so they set up a series of workshops to share their ideas and expertise.
In 2009 they secured their first exhibition, entitling their collection of work ‘Influences’. They included a small selection of traditional work with the main thrust being towards contemporary textiles in two and three dimensions. This very successful exhibition toured the Northeast for two years visiting five galleries and museums.
Wrought Iron in the Furnace by Anne Tuck
In 2010 an exciting opportunity arose when they were invited to have their own gallery at the International Festival of Quilts at the NEC Birmingham in 2012. The work for this exhibition ‘heavy Metal’ was two years in production, each artist responding in an intuitive way to the chosen theme. A great deal of respect was directed towards the Industrial heritage of the Northeast and local culture.
The four artists researched the ideas behind their finished pieces of work and this can be seen in the workbooks which are always available at every exhibition venue. The books give a comprehensive insight into the development of the theme and are as important as the finished work.
Each artist is aware of the collective aspects of the exhibition whilst pursuing her own ideas and remaining independent in her approach and style. Experimentation with materials and techniques is at the core of the work. Feel the heat of the fire, be excited by the roar of motorbikes, intrigued by the making of beautiful Maling china and charmed by the exquisite sculptures. The textiles in this exhibition are as diverse as they are vibrant and colourful.
‘It Happens’ hopes you enjoy your visit to the Heavy Metal exhibition. Observe carefully the figures, hangings, and workbooks and be inspired to create for yourself, enjoying the process as much as they have.
